Sky Ride Accident in Bloomsburg, PA, Injures Employee at Bloomsburg Fair

Bloomsburg, PA — An employee at the Bloomsburg Fair in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, was almost decapitated when his sweatshirt was caught in the machinery of the Sky Ride on Tuesday, September 16, 2014.

The Sky Ride is similar to a ski lift, in that it lifts people into the air and takes them around the fair.

The 23-yer old employee was working near a ride and got his shirt caught in an overhead wheel and a metal wire that carried one of the ride’s individual lifts cut his neck. Another employee was able to hit the emergency off switch, which kept the first employee from being decapitated.

Emergency workers took the man to the hospital. They said that he had lost a lot of blood but that he was conscious. There’s been no update on his condition and his name was not released.

A spokesperson for Reithoffer Amusements, who owns the fair equipment, said that the accident was not a result of a mechanical defect.

Commentary

A spokesperson for the company that actually owns all these rides has come out and said that this accident did not occur as a result of mechanical failure. Well, that’s comforting. But I have say, if I were trying to put some distance between myself and an accident like this, that’s the exact same thing I’d say. Look, I wasn’t there, and I didn’t see this accident happen. I just hope that no one is blindly taking the company at their word, and that the accident is being thoroughly looked into.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
